While the cause of the January house fire on LaPorte Avenue has still not yet been determined, safety issues are raising concerns.
Investigators say in the months leading up to the fire, the residence had failed a federally mandated safety inspection which revealed issues including electrical problems.
While they have not linked the fire to these issues, questions are being raised.
While neighboring states have established laws allowing tenants to withhold rent if housing conditions are unsafe, Indiana does not currently have those laws in place.
State Representative Maureen Bauer stated that she is committed to fighting for stronger tenant rights and protections.
She said that the focus now shifts to preventing future tragedies through better legislation, enforcement and protections.
