A bill to revise Indiana’s 25-foot buffer zone law for police passed a committee Wednesday in a 10-3 vote.

The original 2023 law allowed officers to push people back 25 feet from an active investigation, but the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals blocked it, calling it too vague after media outlets challenged it in court.

Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) introduced House Bill 1122 to address those concerns.

The revised version would allow officers to order someone to stop approaching if they believe their presence within 25 feet would interfere with the investigation.
