A man died early Saturday morning after a vehicle crash on South Bend’s northwest side.

It was around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, a South Bend Police officer on patrol saw a vehicle make a sudden turn from Elwood Avenue onto Huey Street. The vehicle continued onto Humboldt Street before entering an alley between Huey and Elmer Streets.

According to police, the vehicle’s front driver’s side door opened while still moving, and the officer saw the driver outside the vehicle just before it veered into a tree and rolled onto its side. The officer did not pursue the vehicle, and no lights or sirens were activated prior to the crash.

After the crash, officers found the man pinned beneath the vehicle and called for medical assistance. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
