Elkhart city leaders broke ground, Tuesday, on what they call the largest infrastructure project in the city’s history – a $37 million sewer overflow tank and lift station on the southwest side.

Crews have already started building the 1.7-million-gallon system, which is part of the Oakland Project under the Elkhart Aspire initiative.

The project includes a new 10-mile pipeline to the wastewater treatment plant and aims to keep sewage out of the river during heavy rain.

The city also plans to add a bike path during construction.
