Suspected DUI crash under investigation near Elkhart

A two-vehicle crash at a roundabout east of Elkhart city limits is under investigation, with one driver suspected of operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The collision happened around 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, at the intersection of County Roads 13, 18, and 115. Authorities say a 2016 Jeep Renegade traveling westbound struck the rear of a 2021 Toyota Highlander that was stopped at a yield sign before entering the roundabout.

The driver of the Highlander, a 52-year-old man from Leesburg, was not injured. The Jeep’s driver, a 30-year-old Elkhart man, suffered facial lacerations and fled the scene, according to investigators. He was later located after being followed by the other driver and observed by an off-duty deputy.

The Jeep sustained heavy front-end damage, and officials say the man is being investigated for possible intoxicated driving and leaving the scene of a crash. He was transported to Elkhart General Hospital. Charges are pending medical clearance.
