A new AAA study shows that one in three drivers fail to follow “Slow Down, Move Over” laws.

That means they’re putting roadside workers at serious risk. In 2024, 46 emergency responders were killed after being struck by passing vehicles while assisting at crash scenes or breakdowns.

AAA reviewed footage of 12,000 vehicles and found that while most drivers changed lanes, 36% did not slow down or move over at all.

AAA urges stronger enforcement, consistent laws and better public education.

Spokeswoman Molly Hart says, “Every responder lost is a father, mother, son, or daughter who didn’t make it home.”

Change the penalty for this abuse. 10 days in jail + fine for 1st offense, 30 days in jail + double fine + points on license for multiple offenses
