An Elkhart man has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for a bank robbery that happened nearly eight years ago.
Jerry Boomershine, 62, was sentenced April 21, 2026, by U.S. District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty after pleading guilty to bank robbery, according to U.S. Attorney Adam L. Mildred.
Boomershine received a 51-month prison sentence. Of that, 48 months will be served consecutively, with three months served concurrently with an existing state sentence. He will also serve one year of supervised release and must pay $8,450 in restitution.
Authorities say the robbery happened in May 2018 at a Goshen bank. Investigators say Boomershine wore a mask and pointed a gun at employees before stealing approximately $8,450.
At the time, police were unable to identify a suspect but recovered a sweatshirt believed to have been worn during the robbery. The case remained unsolved until April 2025, when DNA evidence linked Boomershine to the crime.
Mildred credited law enforcement agencies for solving the case years later, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Goshen Police Department, and Indiana State Police.
“Regardless of age, those who commit violent crimes will be held accountable,” said Timothy J. O’Malley, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Indianapolis office. “Bank robberies create fear and danger for victims simply going about their day.”
