The South Bend Fire Department has placed a new rescue truck into service.
The department’s new 2026 Rosenbauer Commander Rescue 1 replaces a unit that had been serving the city since 2007.
Fire officials say the truck is designed for complex rescue situations and features improved access to equipment while allowing room for future upgrades as rescue operations continue to evolve.
The new Rescue 1 will be staffed by four specially trained firefighters.
The truck cost about $1.16 million, and the order was placed in July of 2023.
Fire leaders say the new vehicle will help crews respond more effectively to a wide range of emergency situations.
