Federal judge reopens lawsuit, could allow Ten Commandments monument back at Statehouse

A federal judge has reopened a lawsuit that could allow a Ten Commandments monument to return to the Indiana Statehouse grounds.

The original monument stood at the Statehouse for more than three decades before it was vandalized and moved to Anderson.

A court blocked plans for a replacement monument in 2002, ruling it violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita asked the court to revisit the case after a 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling changed how Establishment Clause cases are evaluated.

A federal judge has now reopened the case, giving the ACLU of Indiana an opportunity to update its challenge.
