One person was treated for smoke inhalation after a house fire in Elkhart.

Firefighters were called to the 1200 block of Canton Street shortly before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Sep. 8. Crews found smoke coming from the home and located the fire in the living room.

The fire was under control in about 20 minutes. A dog and two cats were safely removed from the house.

The homeowner has been displaced, and the Red Cross is assisting. Investigators believe a cigarette may have started the fire, though the cause remains under review.
