INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Zoo officials say it still be a while before the public can see their new 6-week-old baby dolphin.

Zoo leaders kept quiet about the birth of the female dolphin named Calypso on April 24. Staffers monitored mother and baby around the clock for about a month.

Indianapolis Zoo vice president Rob Shumaker tells The Indianapolis Star that dolphin calves are more fragile than many other mammals. Calypso has nearly doubled her birth weight to about 70 pounds and is starting to briefly venture away from her mother’s side.

Shows have resumed in the zoo’s Dolphin Pavilion, but Calypso and her mother remain in a pool that’s not open to visitors. If all continues to go well, the public might be able to see Calypso sometime this summer.
