Two Dowagiac (Mich.) Middle School students could face charges after police say they called 911 earlier this week and mentioned a school shooting as an apparent prank.

The Cass County Central Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a cell phone at about 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, and the caller stated “A shooting in the school” three times and then laughed, according to Steven Grinnewald, director of public safety for Dowagiac. 

Police sent officers to all of the schools in Dowagiac as a precaution and alerted school administrators, while Dowagiac Union Schools called parents about the incident.

Officers and school administrators identified the two students as suspects on Wednesday, March 2. The students admitted that they made the phone call but it was a prank and they never intended to do anything to hurt anyone, Grinnewald said.

The case was forwarded to the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.
