Narcan to be used by St. Joseph County Police Department officers starting late spring

Officers with the St. Joseph County Police Department will soon be equipped with a medicine that helps prevent and stop heroin and opioid overdoses.

The department will be equipped with naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, by late spring thanks to a grant from a non-profit, the South Bend Tribune reported. About 80 officers will be trained on using Narcan.

Medics carry Narcan, but more police departments started using it because officers are often the first to arrive to a scene where someone may be overdosing on heroin or opioid painkillers. The South Bend Police Department began using a nasal spray version of Narcan in August.

Find out how often Narcan has been used in St. Joseph County and why the Mishawaka Police Department doesn’t have it in the full story from the South Bend Tribune.
