After 2 girls shot in South Bend, 15-year-old boy petitioned on auto theft

A 15-year-old boy is being petitioned into juvenile court on a felony charge after prosecutors say he stole a vehicle that two teenage girls were in when they were shot earlier this month.

The teenager, who has not been identified, is accusing of stealing a Nissan car sometime between Jan. 2 and Jan. 3, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office

Four girls between the ages 12 and 14 were inside the car early in the morning Jan. 3 and the teenager was driving when the car was shot at near the area of Harrison and Van Buren streets in South Bend. Two of the girls were shot in the back and two other girls were injured when the car crashed after the shooting.

James J. Carter III and Jacquise Carter were arrested and charged in connection to the shooting.

The 15-year-old was petitioned for auto theft, a level 6 felony, on Wednesday, Jan. 27. He was released from juvenile detention and placed on house arrest Friday morning, Jan. 29. He was also ordered to wear a GPS device.
