Billy Meckling, Notre Dame student who died after falling from Joyce Center, was intoxicated at time of fall

A University of Notre Dame senior who died after falling from the roof of Joyce Center on May 16 was intoxicated at the time of the fall.

William Meckling, 21, had a 0.12 percent blood alcohol level at the time of his death, said Chuck Hurley, deputy coroner with St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office, according to a South Bend Tribune article posted Thursday morning.

For comparison, the legal driving limit in Indiana is 0.08 percent.

It’s the latest news in a tragic story that began with Meckling’s death the same weekend he was set to graduate from the university.

His death was ruled an accident after an autopsy was performed in May. The coroner determined Meckling had injuries consistent with a fall from about 35 feet.

Meckling, who was known as Billy, had climbed to an area of the roof in the early morning hours of May 16 and fell at about 3:45 a.m. The area where Meckling fell from was wet from rain.

He was set to graduate May 17 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was also a member of the fencing team and was from Centennial, Colo.
