A robbery suspect who was shot in the leg by a police officer during a chase on Tuesday night has been identified.

Avery Ray, 26, is being treated at an area hospital and was placed under arrest in connection to an armed robbery reported at a Check Into Cash store on Portage Avenue on Tuesday, according to WNDU.

Officers from the South Bend Police Department responded to a robbery alarm at the store at about 5 p.m. When officers arrived, they saw a man with a gun — later identified as Ray — run into a wooded area near Hurwich Apartments, WNDU reported.

The two officers chased him and at one point Ray raised his gun at the officers, Lt. Dave Wells with St. Joseph County Metro Homicide told our news partners ABC 57. That’s when one of the officers shot the suspect in the leg.

The shooting is under investigation by St. Joseph County Metro Homicide, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. The officers will be named when the investigation is complete.
