Trash fee hike back on the table for South Bend Common Council

The South Bend Common Council will again consider a proposal to increase trash fees by $2 over the next two years.

Under the proposal, fees would increase by $1 per month on Jan. 1, 2016, and then by $1 again on Jan. 1, 2017, according to the South Bend Tribune.

That’s a 19 percent rise from the current trash fee of $10.56 per month, or about $126.72 per year. The costs cover trash and yard waste pickup, but do not include recycling.

Another proposal to be considered by the Common Council would require residents to use a city-approved container for yard waste for an additional $16 a year. Public Works Director Eric Horvath told the Tribune that it would allow city trucks to efficiently pick up yard waste while reducing back injuries and other workplace injuries.

Excess waste would be picked up one every month by request at no extra cost.

Residents would pay a total of $15.86 per month in 2017 for trash, yard waste and recycling pickup, the Tribune reported. Residents currently pay $12.53 for the same services. City residents who want a yard waste container pay an additional $1.33 per month.

The proposals will be considered during the Common Council’s Nov. 9 meeting.

Read more about the proposals, including the reasons why city officials are seeking them, in the full story from the South Bend Tribune.
