Suspected hit-and-run driver faces new charges after victim dies

The driver suspected in a hit-and-run crash near Notre Dame earlier this month faces several new charges after the victim died.

Mark Madejek, 38, was charged Monday, Oct. 26, with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and driving while suspended resulting in death, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors also filed a motion requesting that Madejek’s bond be increased.

Madejek was previously charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury and driving while suspended resulting in serious bodily injury.

The charges stem from a hit-and-run crash on Oct. 17 on S.R. 23 near Ironwood Drive that sent 27-year-old Stephen Stetz to the hospital with serious injuries. Stetz died Friday evening, Oct. 23.
