The state fire marshal is encouraging Hoosiers to pay attention to fireworks laws and safety recommendations while getting a head start on Fourth of July celebrations this week.

Fireworks are allowed to be set off before the holiday weekend but state law restricts when and where, according to Jim Greeson, state fire marshal.

Hoosiers can light fireworks from 9 a.m. until two hours after sunset from Monday, June 29, through Friday, July 3 and from Sunday, July 5, through Thursday, July 9.

Fireworks are also also permitted from 9 a.m. to midnight July 4.

Residents must light fireworks on their property, on the property of someone who has given permission or at a special location approved by local officials, Greeson said. Violators could be fined up to $500 per incident.

Hoosiers who follow state fireworks regulations but damage another person’s property could be fined up to $5,000 and spend up to one year in jail.

INDIVIDUAL CITY LAWS

Cities in Michiana have local ordinances that dictate when and where fireworks can be lit.

In Mishawaka city limits, fireworks are allowed from 5 p.m. to two hours after sunset from Monday, June 29, through Friday, July 3 and from Sunday, July 5, through Thursday, July 9.

Fireworks can also be lit from 10 a.m. Saturday, July 4, to midnight. Fireworks must be lit on private property and not in city streets, alleys or parks.

In South Bend city limits, fireworks can be lit from 5 to 11 p.m. Monday, June 29, through Friday, July 3 and from Sunday, July 5, through Thursday, July 9.

Fireworks on the Fourth of July are allowed from 10 a.m. to midnight.
