LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The leader of the Michigan Senate is calling for votes on a “last, best” road-funding deal he says legislative leaders agreed on before talks stalled.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof said Tuesday the House should send the legislation to conference committee and “go get the votes.”

A spokesman for GOP House Speaker Kevin Cotter says Meekhof “should know there is no deal” after the House’s Democratic leader “changed his mind on an income tax cut.”

Meekhof says the $1.2 billion road-funding plan includes raising the 19-cents-a-gallon state gasoline tax by roughly 6 ½ cents, then boosting it with inflation over time.

Income tax cuts would be triggered if revenues rise by more than inflation. Democrats are concerned over disproportionately aiding the wealthy with an income tax cut.
