SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) — The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge is marking the completion of a 16-month, $8.9 million toll plaza project.

A ribbon-cutting is planned on Wednesday followed by a public open house on Thursday at the bridge connecting Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Flags from the U.S. and Canada will be raised and a plaza dedication plaque will be unveiled.

A new administration building and seven toll lanes replaced a 53-year-old building and five toll lanes built in 1962 as part of the original bridge project.

The new plaza is designed to improve safety by providing more southbound traffic merging space between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspection booths and bridge toll booths. The project also provides a dedicated customer service area and parking.
