LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan would tax medical marijuana and regulate the drug in a tiered system similar to alcohol and gambling under bills approved by the state House.

The chamber voted 95-11 for legislation Wednesday to let licensed “provisioning centers” sell marijuana to patients or caregivers. The businesses would pay a 3 percent tax on their gross retail income, in addition to Michigan’s 6 percent sales tax.

Another bill would amend the 2008 voter-approved medical marijuana law to authorize non-smokable forms such as oils, food and pills.

Advocates say legislation is needed in part because the Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that dispensaries facilitating transactions can be shut down as a public nuisance. Some municipalities have let the dispensaries continue to operate while others have not.

The bills next go to the Senate.
