LaPorte County councilman arrested, accused of selling pot to undercover officer

LaPorte County Councilman Matt Bernacchi was arrested Wednesday, April 8, on charges of delivering marijuana, a misdemeanor, and maintaining a common nuisance, a Level 6 felony.

Police say Bernacchi sold pot to an undercover officer in his work car in Valparaiso, according to 95.3 MNC’s news partners ABC 57.

The Porter County Drug Unit told ABC-57 News that Bernacchi arranged for the sale on Facebook.

In 2014, Bernacchi was cited for driving 70 mph in a 55 mph zone, ABC 57 reported.

After receiving the citation, Bernacchi made a post on Facebook that made headlines.

“As the fine officer handed me my ticket all I can think of is why are they harassing taxpayers over a speed and not the drug dealers who are killing the children of LaPorte County on a weekly basis,” Bernacchi said in his posting, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.

Bernacchi posted bond and was released from jail on Thursday, WSBT reported.
