LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A new bill would eliminate the classification of “policewomen” from Michigan law.

The Lansing State Journal reports the bill introduced this week by Republican state Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker of Lawton would drop the word from the list of Michigan State Police grades and duties spelled out in state law.

Schuitmaker says the classification was “antiquated” and the title “was used at a time when female members of the MSP were paid less than men.” The bill was introduced during Police Appreciation Week and Law Enforcement Appreciation Month.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
