INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — State homeland security crews have sent more than 200,000 sandbags to three northern Indiana counties where residents are shoring up neighborhoods against floodwaters.

Homeland Security spokeswoman Amber Kent said Friday 218,000 sandbags were dispatched to Jasper and Porter counties in northwestern Indiana and northeastern Indiana’s Adams County.

Kent says most of the sandbags were trucked to Adams County, where flooding along the St. Marys River is affecting the small city of Decatur. Wabash River flooding is also impacting the Adams County town of Geneva.

Sixteen inmates are helping fill those bags with sand in that county and put them in place to hold back floodwaters.

Moderate to heavy rain from Tropical Storm Bill’s remnants were falling Friday across much of Indiana, adding to runoff from several days of rainfall.
