The public is welcome to comment on a proposed ordinance to allow food trucks in the city of South Bend during the South Bend Common Council meeting on Monday night, Sept. 14.
The proposed bill would include regulations on mobile food vendors and mobile food carts, including health and safety inspections and licensing requirements, according to the bill on the city’s website.
As is, the bill would allow food trucks and carts to be parked in areas zoned for business, commercial, industrial and mixed use for up to four hours, including areas parallel to sidewalks. A minimum five feet of unobstructed sidewalk or walking area would be required.

Food carts and trucks would need a special permit to operate in public parks and meet other regulations outlined in the bill.
If passed, the ordinance would also redefine the word “restaurant” in the city code to include mobile food trucks and carts, hotels and motels that serve continental breakfast and businesses that have soda fountains, coffee dispensaries or slushy machines.

The South Bend Common Council is set to meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, on the fourth floor of the county-city building, 227 W. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend.
