Families of 2 teen who drowned in Park Jefferson swimming pool file lawsuit

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Relatives of a teenage couple who drowned in a South Bend apartment complex’s swimming pool have filed a wrongful death lawsuit in their deaths.

The complaint alleges Park Jefferson’s management failed to properly monitor the pool, mark water depths and train employees in CPR.

The St. Joseph County suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages in the January deaths of 19-year-old Keontaye Watson and 19-year-old Jeannie Martin.

The South Bend Tribune reports the couple drowned in the apartment complex’s indoor swimming pool after Watson began struggling in the water and Martin jumped in to try to help him.

Court records do not list an attorney for the apartment complex.

A woman who answered the telephone Saturday at Park Jefferson said no one would be available for comment until Monday.
