Four Indiana shipwrecks in Lake Michigan featured in 3-D on Indiana DNR site

CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP) — A new website created by the state Department of Natural Resources is giving visitors 3-D views of four shipwrecks along Indiana’s Lake Michigan coastline.

The Indiana Shipwrecks website includes a recreation of the wreck of the J.D. Marshall, which sank in 1911, and three other shipwrecks in the lake.

The wreckage of the J.D. Marshall became Indiana’s first underwater preserve site two years ago. That preserve is in Porter County, just off the shores of Indiana Dunes State Park.

Data for the website’s four virtual 3-D shipwrecks were gathered using detailed sonar scans to create images of the vessels’ underwater wreckage.

Mike Molnar of Indiana’s Lake Michigan Coastal Program says the DNR hopes the website will attract more underwater tourists and get others interested in Indiana’s unknown maritime history.
