Fire damages four houses at two separate scenes in South Bend on Wednesday morning

Firefighters from the South Bend Fire Department are battling house fires at two separate locations on South Bend’s near northwest side on Wednesday morning, Oct. 21.

A fire that destroyed a vacant house in the 500 block of Scott Street in South Bend spread to the two homes on either side of it, according to WNDU

The vacant house is a total loss. The house to the south of the vacant house has extensive damage, while the home to the north side has limited damage.

A woman who was in the second home that caught fire on Scott Street knew it was a fire when she woke up because the windows were fogging up, our news partners ABC 57 reported. The glass began to break as the windows blew out. She escaped the home in time. Nobody else was in the home.

Another fire was reported on Bonds Avenue, about two miles away from Scott Street. The blaze was smaller and confined and believed to be in a vacant home, ABC 57 reported.

Neighboring fire departments are on standby to assist the South Bend Fire Department if needed.
