PORTAGE, Ind. (AP) — Six members of a northwestern Indiana family alerted by a police officer knocking on their door escaped an early morning house fire.

Portage Assistant Fire Chief Tim Sosby says no one was injured in the blaze Tuesday, but one child was transported to a hospital following an asthma attack and an infant suffered minor smoke inhalation.

Sosby says a neighbor reported the fire about 4 a.m. The home had working smoke detectors that weren’t set off by the smoke.

Sosby tells The (Munster) Times the fire started in a garage on the opposite side of the home from the bedrooms. He says that when firefighters arrived, the garage and part of the home was fully involved in flames, but the bedroom area wasn’t damaged.
