South Bend abortion clinic closes

St. Joseph County’s only abortion clinic closed for good on Friday, March 18, according to activist group Pro-Choice South Bend.

Abortions have not been performed at the Women’s Pavilion at 2010 Ironwood Circle, South Bend, for four months. After the Indiana Department of Health received complaints from anti-abortion organization The Life Center, clinic doctor Ulrich Klopfer agreed to give up the clinic’s license in early November.

The Women’s Pavilion remained open since November to provide referrals to other abortion clinics.

Though the clinic is closing, attorney Shawn Sullivan said in a statement that The Life Center is monitoring the status of Klopfer’s medical license. A hearing is scheduled for August.

The nearest abortion clinics to St. Joseph County are in Kalamazoo, Mich., Merrillville, Chicago and Indianapolis.

The group Pro-Choice South Bend is hosting a vigil at the Women’s Pavilion at 7 p.m. Friday.
