The 10-year-old girl who died after a house fire on O’Brien Street early Thursday morning, May 26, has been identified.

Lanijah Kyle was rescued by firefighters and rushed to a hospital, where she died, according to the South Bend Fire Department.

Four other people — a 28-year-old woman, a 38-year-old man, a 9-year-old boy and a 6-year-old boy — escaped the house as it was burning and were treated at an area hospital for smoke inhalation and cuts.

The man ran out of the home with one of the boys while the woman dropped the other boy out of a second story window before jumping out of the window herself, the fire department said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but firefighters say it started in the kitchen. The fire detectors in the home were working.

The house was destroyed by the fire.
