Pedestrian dead after being hit by pickup truck while crossing State Road 39 near state line

A person died after he was was hit by a pickup truck on S.R. 39 just south of the Michigan-Indiana state line late Tuesday night, May 31.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 26-year-old Michigan City man, told police he was driving north on S.R. 39 when the victim suddenly ran into the roadway just before 10:30 p.m. CST, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office said. The driver said he couldn’t avoid hitting the victim.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. His name will be released when his family is notified about his death.

The driver was on his way to work at the time and tested negative for alcohol. He’s not suspected of any crime, the sheriff’s department said.

The crash remains under investigation.
