The ex-wife of the Berrien County Courthouse shooter said he was likely trying to escape so that he could see his family.

Jessica Gordon told the Detroit Free Press that Larry Darnell Gordon was “not a monster.” They divorced earlier this year after 19 years of marriage. The two have a 6-year-old daughter together.

Larry Gordon had been in Berrien County Jail since April 20. Sheriff Paul Bailey said he was at the courthouse Tuesday for a hearing on domestic violence and criminal sexual conduct charges.

Larry Gordon wrestled a gun away from Berrien County Sheriff‘s Deputy James Atterberry Jr. while being escorted from a holding cell on the third floor of the courthouse to a courtroom. Larry Gordon shot Atterberry, bailiffs Joe Zangaro and Ron Kienzle and an unnamed female civilian before he was shot and killed by two other unnamed bailiffs.

The incident began between 2:15 and 2:30 p.m. and lasted about five minutes.
