KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) — Work is just about finished on a 26-acre solar farm at the site of a former scrap steel plant in Kokomo.

The project’s developer says the solar farm is likely to be operational in early December and will include some 21,000 solar panels.

Austin Williams of South Bend-based Inovateus Solar tells the Kokomo Tribune that the farm’s electricity will go directly to Duke Energy’s distribution system under a 20-year, purchased-power agreement with the utility company.

The solar farm is on a portion of a former Continental Steel plant, which underwent a federal project costing more than $40 million to demolish the factory and remove tons of lead- and PCB-contaminated waste.

City Engineer Carey Stranahan says the project is putting the site to use for the first time in decades.
