Michigan City, LaPorte children discovered to have elevated lead levels

Area communities continue to be added to the list of those that have discovered elevated lead levels in children.

Michigan City and LaPorte have joined South Bend on that list, according to the South Bend Tribune.

South Bend and LaPorte have lead problems based not on their water supplies, but on paint from older housing. In South Bend, nearly a third of the children who were tested show elevated lead levels.

Michigan City is putting together a study group to plan their own response to the problem after upwards of 19 percent of children in different neighborhoods have shown elevated levels.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health departments across the country encourage people living in homes built before 1978 to test for lead levels in their homes.
