St. Joseph County Council voting on Human Rights ordinance Tuesday night

It’s expected to be a full house at the St. Joseph County Council meeting Tuesday night.

The council will vote on the controversial Human Rights ordinance that’s been under discussion for months. Supporters and opponents are expected to voice their concerns at the meeting, according to WSBT.

The ordinance was tabled months ago when legal concerns arose about how the bill would relate to state law. Those issues have been resolved.

It would also add sexual orientation and gender identity to a list of protected classes in the county, similar to South Bend’s ordinance that was passed in 2012. Religious and state organizations would be exempted.

The council meeting starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
