Elkhart officers equipped with new body cameras

(Sam Householder/Elkhart Truth)

A few short months after their use was suspended, body cameras are back on the job this week with Elkhart Police officers.

Use of the cameras was suspended in January by Mayor Tim Neese. 25-percent of the cameras were in repair that month, according to WSBT.

The issues came to light when two officers were involved in the shooting death of Norman Gary of Elkhart. One of the officers was wearing a body cam, but it was not working. Now, officers are hoping the new batch of 80 body cams will be more reliable.

A new shipment of cameras arrived last month and officers are already noticing improvements. The EPD says the cameras’ provider, Digital Ally, has worked closely with the department to eliminate the previous issues.
