The state prison in Michigan City was on lockdown Friday night after an inmate reportedly started a fire in his cell. Jail officials confirmed that the inmate, 30 year-old Joshua Devine, died after allegedly starting the fire around 9:45 pm Friday.

Devine was serving a 16-year sentence for attempted robbery and due for release in July of 2023. An investigation is underway to ascertain if he had displayed any signs of being suicidal.

The fire was confined to his own cell but the building was filled with smoke.

Prison officials say there were no signs of anything out of the ordinary at a bed check performed at 9 p.m.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
