A fire Sunday at a vacant building owned by Forest River RV did enough damage to make the building a total loss.

Firefighters rushed to a fire at around 3:20 p.m. on Oakland Avenue near C.R. 19 and Hively Ave on the south side of Elkhart Sunday. Damage to the building is estimated to be $279,000, which is also the value of the building, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Traffic on County Road 20 was backed up for about an hour due to the fire and responding crews. Smoke could be seen several miles away during the height of the blaze.

Forest River officials were hoping to renovate the building to house the company’s Elkhart Coach division, according to the South Bend Tribune.

It’s still not known how the fire started.
