Elkhart planning on new first complex for police, fire, 911, and emergency management

(Ben Quiggle/Elkhart Truth)

The City of Elkhart might soon have all of its first responders working together under the same roof.

A new complex being proposed would house the city’s fire, police, 9-1-1 communications, and emergency management department, according to the Elkhart Truth.

The Elkhart City Council has approved $50,000 to have an engineering firm conduct a study designed to locate the most beneficial location for the building. The facility, which would be dominated by the police department, would have more space for each department than they enjoy now, as well as meeting spaces, increased communication capabilities, and potential for training programs.

Construction would take some time, and there are no estimates yet on what the facility would cost.
