Elkhart County’s unemployment rate is now under 2-percent, and still among the lowest in the state.
The county’s rate in April dropped to 1.9-percent, down almost an entire percentage point from 2.8-percent in March. It’s the lowest rate in the county since May of 1999, when it was at 1.8-percent, according to The Elkhart Truth.
The numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Indiana Department of Workforce Development point out that the county’s unemployment rate at the height of the Great Recession in March of 2009 was 20 percent.
Neighboring St. Joseph, Marshall, Kosciusko, and Fulton Counties are all also under 4-percent for the month of April. The state of Indiana has an unemployment rate of 3.6-percent, lower than the national average of 4.4-percent.
