Great Lakes funding would be affected in President Donald Trump’s budget

The president’s budget proposal is causing worry among some in Southwest Michigan.

That’s because funding for the Great Lakes appears to be in jeopardy. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are expressing their concern over cuts that include EPA grants that would impact the Clean Air and Water Act, as well as the elimination of funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Democratic Representative Dan Kildee told ABC 57 that protecting the lakes is not a partisan issue, and eliminating that funding would threaten the state’s jobs, livelihood, and way of life. He noted that both parties have supported the initiative.

Republican Fred Upton says the proposal would cut funding to important domestic programs that many Michiganders rely on.

Smaller government always best way! May 25, 2017 at 3:31 pm

Think about it…If there are laws in place to protect the Great Lakes (there are) and there are police agencies to enforce the laws that already exist (there are) whats the problem? The problem is Trump is taking away the ability for groups like the EPA to squander our tax dollars at their own discretion which is usually very suspect. Way to go Trump!
