An 85-year-old man was airlifted Friday morning after a one-vehicle crash near the Elkhart County Correctional Facility.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department says officers were called to the scene on C.R. 7 south of Bent Oak Trail shortly after 8 a.m. Friday.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle after leaving the roadway and crashing into a tree near the facility. The helicopter landed in a field near the jail.

WSBT is reporting that the driver may have suffered a medical issue beforehand. The sheriff’s department only confirms that he suffered minor bleeding to the head and was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
