FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A northern Indiana woman who was driving 142 mph when she caused a fatal crash has pleaded guilty but mentally ill.

Thirty-eight-year-old Stacey R. Motz-Altman’s trial had been scheduled for September. She pleaded guilty but mentally ill last week to reckless homicide and criminal recklessness.

The Journal Gazette reports that an Allen County judge will sentence the Winona Lake woman on July 31.

Police say Motz-Altman was driving east on U.S. 30 last September at 142 mph when she rear-ended a car and pushed it into the rear of a semi-trailer.

The car’s driver, 54-year-old Luann Simon, was pinned inside her vehicle’s wreckage and later died.

Court records state that police determined Motz-Altman’s speed at the time of the crash from her seat belt control module.
