The South Bend Common Council voted unanimously Monday night to give a helping hand to the city’s food trucks.
WNDU reports the council passed ordinances that would double their possible hours of operation from four to eight, and enforce laws that makes it easier for the trucks to find places to park.
They also approved a cut in the cost of licenses for the food trucks, from a flat fee to one that varies based on on adjusted to how many days of the year they operate. The fees break down to:
- One-day license: $50
- 30-day license: $130.00
- 3-month license: $200.00
- Annual/seasonal: $525.00
It’s hoped that the changes will encourage more food trucks in the city.

I really don’t get the appeal of a dive on wheels.
Re: Food Trucks downtown South Bend
Just returned from Eugene, OR., attending our grandson’s graduation from the University of Oregon. It seems that the Eugene has provided unimproved lots for 8 – 12 food trucks to park to serve their wide range of food offerings. Not only does it make it easy for one to find their favorite truck, but guarantees the truck to be found at the same place and time which makes it easier for the owner to set up and down and perhaps, leave the truck at the same place and not have to move at the end of the day. Downtown South Bend has numerous properties either owned by some city or private entity that could be used for such, i.e. Century Center, west of the Bankruptcy Court, Morris Civic Auditorium, etc. Such an arrangement seems to have worked for Eugene for many years.
