Charges have been filed against a Mishawaka man who tried to break into a South Bend school, then led police on a wild chase.

35-year-old Melvin Ward III is charged with three felonies: intimidation, resisting law enforcement, and attempted battery by means of a deadly weapon. He’s also facing a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement.

This follows the August 24 incident at Stanley Clark School, where he allegedly tried to break into the school with a weapon, but was unsuccessful. Court documents say Ward was screeching his tires and frightened school officials.

Ward then tried to ram police vehicles before leading police on a chase up South Michigan Street, hitting two cars along the way, before eventually being tased and arrested near downtown South Bend after a struggle.

He’s in custody at St. Joseph County jail on $15,000 bond.
