A 2-year-old child was killed when a family member struck the toddler in the driveway of a home.

It happened around 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3, in the 20000 block of Old 205 in Mason Township.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the family was having a birthday party at the home and the relative, a 64-year-old woman from Elkhart, was pulling into the driveway in a pick-up truck and struck and ran over the child, who police identified as Nayla Ryans.

Family members began doing CPR until medics arrived to take over.

Ryans was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

The driver of the vehicle is cooperating with law enforcement.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision.
