I&M to rebuild New Carlisle-to-Mishawaka power lines

You may notice some work being done early next year on the power lines that run between New Carlisle and Mishawaka.

Indiana-Michigan Power has announced plans to rebuild its 25-mile power line that crosses through South Bend, with a hopeful groundbreaking in the spring of 2018 and completion by the summer of 2020.

The South Bend Tribune reports the project comes with a price tag of $61 million and would call for upgrading five substations in the process. The infrastructure in place dates back to the 1920s.

A company spokesman says the impact to property owners should be minimal. However, the purchasing of easement rights may be needed.

The first part of the project, which would run from the springs of 2018 and 2019, would build a line in South Bend near the Bendix and Boland substation and would connect to the substation near Edison and Hickory.

The other sections, connecting South Bend to New Carlisle and Mishawaka, would begin work in the fall of 2018 and end in summer of 2020.
