Officers confirm autistic boy from Elkhart drowned in Lake Wawasee

SYRACUSE, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a 13-year-old boy has died in a suspected drowning at a lake in northern Indiana.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement says a 43-year-old Elkhart woman went to check on her son at a home in Syracuse late Friday and couldn’t find him. Her husband checked the area on foot and, after about a half hour, found his son in the water at nearby Lake Wawasee. Emergency crews tried reviving him, but were unsuccessful.

Police, fire and sheriff’s officials responded Saturday and the DNR says the boy couldn’t be revived. The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department identified the boy as Christopher Dixon. The press release also mentions that Dixon was autistic.

The death is under investigation.
